I first hiked the Pacific Crest Trail over the course of 1994 and 1996, then I hiked the whole thing in one go in 2013. During the latter hike I kept this website updated as I progressed up the trail. I still have about 45 hours of video to edit, but in the meantime there is a lot for you to look at here. Over the course of the 168 days I wrote 138,734 words and put 13,644 photos on this website.
Made dinner for breakfast and was on the trail around 7:00am or so. Couldn't get into any music at all so it was just a lot of podcast listening today. The trail went through a big burned area so there was not much to look at. I started getting a little bored and antsy to get to Kennedy Meadows so I just started jogging. This didn't last long but it was nice change of pace.
I was a bit irked for taking time off at Walker Pass because I knew I would only feel like doing about 10 miles into KM, but instead I had 20 miles to do today.
The trail drug on but after a few hours Yard Sale and I reached the road to Kennedy Meadows. The walk there was about a mile but it went by fast.
Got there and Dr. Sole was there. He is this guy who travels with a small RV and takes care of people's feet. I started seeing a lot of folks I knew.
Ordered a burger and got my seven packages I had sent there. The staff at KM has a huge zoo of packages to deal with, but they have it pretty organized. "Giffen in areas #2, #4, #11, and #12" the lady said.
I had two resupply packages, an ice axe, some microspikes, a bear can, my new G15 camera, and something else I am forgetting.
Hooligan was sitting across the table from me as I was opening up the zoo of packages. The microspikes were a mess of black rubber and chains.
"yes! My ultralight bondage kit is here!", I yelled. Hooligan's eyes got really big until I started laughing at him, then he realized they were microspikes.
In talking with folks it seems a lot of folks had a lot of trouble over the last 150 miles. Screaming at the wind, etc. About five hikers got sick from some sort of water issue or something. It turns out it was Wendy who had rolled off her sleeping pad in the middle of the night and it blew away in the strong wind.
I went to Tom's place down the street to see if I could get a trailer to stay in. Tom is this guy who lets hikers stay at his place and he has a variety of 5th wheel trailers for use. It was a bit disorganized and I really needed to unpack, so I headed back up to the store and set up in the area they have set aside for hikers. Later someone set up an organization system for the trailers. You put your name on the list and they start handing them out at 4:20pm.
Ran into ____, it was good to see him again. I thought he was ahead of me but he had taken time off to go visit his girlfriend in a touristy town. Apparently over the course of four days, no sights other than the bedroom and nearby mini-mart were taken in.
There is no Internet here and the store runs off generator power. Thankfully I had battery power left since they shut the generator off while I was copying photos.
I still have a lot of busy work to do tomorrow (back up photos, mail out laptop, mail home camera, etc), so it looks like I won't make it out until tomorrow afternoon.
They started playing the movie over at Tom's place so I ended up going over there after a lot of BS'ing with folks. It was "Big Fish". Watched the movie and then went and crashed out in Mr. Tent.
