I first hiked the Pacific Crest Trail over the course of 1994 and 1996, then I hiked the whole thing in one go in 2013. During the latter hike I kept this website updated as I progressed up the trail. I still have about 45 hours of video to edit, but in the meantime there is a lot for you to look at here. Over the course of the 168 days I wrote 138,734 words and put 13,644 photos on this website.
Today was a pretty relaxing day in Vancouver. Keith, Cora and I went to a nearby coffee shop to get coffee. At one point there were several guys in there with beards, Keith called it the "Beardo Vibe".
Cora and I later drove to a thrift store and checked it out. After that we walked up to a coffee shop and I wrote stuff for this blog. It was nearing 3pm so I went to move our car to the coffee shop's parking lot.
I DROVE A CAR FOR TWO BLOCKS!
Things went ok, didn't dump the clutch or anything. Cora and I went to a pizza place that our friend's recommended. It was great.
Yesterday Keith asked us if we had any interest in seeing this juggalos-ish band "Twistez" (sp?). It was a show a student of his was putting on. We had planned on going, but since Melinda worked at a curling rink...we were really wanting to check out curling. It is Canada after all.
We went there and got some beer. There were a few leagues finishing up their games. Melinda and Keith told us what was going on with the game play. Some folks came by and said hello. I can't remember the context but someone mentioned about getting injured and having a hurt leg. One of the other guys says "Yeah, as we say here in Canada...you have stiffness and swelling in all the wrong places!".
After the rink cleared we went down there and tried out curling. It was a lot of fun, I picked up the gist of it pretty quickly. It was nice to have Keith and Melinda to show us what the heck to do.
We went to a diner and had some food, then made our way home.
Ugh, I really have to follow through on my post PCT plan of giving Facebook the heave ho. Long story short I privately had it out with someone who was not being honest about their hike. They were not being honest with themselves nor their fellow hikers. (I was not the only person having issues with them. One told me "It ain't 'Mexico to Canada' if you skip 1/4th of a fucking state"). Here this person had skipped (at least) 100 miles of the PCT because they didn't feel like doing certain parts or had outside engagements, yet said they still thru-hiked the entire 2660 mile trail. I don't care if people skip parts of the trail if they are honest about it. If you say you hiked the entire trail, you better well have done it.
The main reason why it is a crappy thing to lie about the distance you hiked is that as of this writing, there are a whole crop of hikers who are having to quit their hikes with only 60 miles left to go due to heavy snow. They have even walked farther than the person in question above, yet these folks won't even get the option of even walking to the monument.
SO ANYWAY, enough about this! Tomorrow we are driving back to Portland, hopefully it won't be a super long haul.
