Pacific Crest Trail 2013

I first hiked the Pacific Crest Trail over the course of 1994 and 1996, then I hiked the whole thing in one go in 2013. During the latter hike I kept this website updated as I progressed up the trail. I still have about 45 hours of video to edit, but in the meantime there is a lot for you to look at here. Over the course of the 168 days I wrote 138,734 words and put 13,644 photos on this website.

Woke up and Joh and I went to the Eastwind for breakfast. They have a little dining area inside. There were a few flies in there...but there was also flypaper hanging too, which was quite covered. (of course I had to get a photo of this too). Joh bought me breakfast (thanks man!) and dropped me off at Shrek's place.

I spent most of the day getting photos together for the blog, along with videos of Mark/Rusty playing, plus Freddie and I crossing the creeks.

I realized there was no way I was gonna be done by 5pm when the post office closed. Since I'm less stressed about time now, I just figured I would leave tomorrow sometime.

I spent all day nerding out on the computer. At one point another hiker asked if he could jump on for about 15 minutes. I told him he probably could a bit later when I was done...but it was my computer. "AHHHH! I wondered about that since I didn't see it yesterday, I thought it was a house computer", he said.

I posted on Facebook the video of Mark and Rusty playing and people enjoyed it.

Kept working on the blog and finally took a break around 9pm and went down to the grocery store before it closed.

The wind was blowing hard and I saw beer cans flying all over the lot. Someone was returning some cans and they were falling everywhere.

Inside when I went to pay for my food I put my bag that had my money/camera/etc in it. The guy said "oh...that is not a bag of potatoes. I nearly punched in the code thinking that was a bag of red potatoes".

Got back and talked to a few hikers, I could feel my energy draining out. I did meet a guy from Portland named Siddhartha who had hiked the trail last year. He was out for a few days helping out Shrek with his place.

There was another hiker here named Let it Be. I hadn't talked to him much but it turns out he has been hiking a lot. He knew Jack Fair and started laughing really hard when I started doing my impression of Jack. Let It Be is the only other person I have met who saw the amazing wood carving Jack had done. I think I mentioned it months ago, but it was basically a block of wood that was carved out into this hollow box with rails. A ball would slide back and forth between the rails. Attached to all of this was a wooden chain...that was carved whole, no glue or anything.

Met a southbounder named Zeke the Freak who had used my planning program and thanked me for it.

Siddhartha talked about some other hikers who had been through in the week or two prior. One was Rodger Dodger who I haven't seen since the Sierras. He said that near Big Lake Youth Camp Rodger was hiking with his sister. It was her birthday on one of the days. Rodger had gotten someone to distract her and while she was distracted, he blew up a bunch of helium balloons with a canister tank that he had packed. How nice of him.

Went back up to the treehouse and tried working on the blog but couldn't get much farther. The photos finally did get all uploaded though.

Tomorrow I really super duper think I will be getting out of town.
